The Rochester Symphony Orchestra has a new music director for the first time in more than 40 years. Chia-Hsuan Lin's path to conducting was sparked by a life-changing event.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — In Carlos Simón’s “Fate Conquers,” the composer uses a diary entry written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1815, “The Iliad. 22nd book, but Fate now conquers. “When you think about destiny, there are so many unknowns and so many uncertainties,” said Chia-Hsuan Lin, the new music director of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. You need to experience it,” he said.
Hayashi-san can relate too. A life-changing event set her on the path to becoming a conductor. However, Lin always had a passion for music.
“When I was a kid, I was watching TV and it was a piano concerto. And I saw the pianist on stage doing this…fingering on the black keys and the white keys. was flying. I was fascinated. I loved it,” Lin recalled.
Her parents nurtured her curiosity and had her take piano lessons from the age of three.
Lin, who grew up in Taiwan, learned piano in elementary school and then percussion instruments. Majored in percussion performance at National Taiwan Normal University.
“After graduating from college, I was applying to graduate programs in the United States when I was hit by a car. That changed the trajectory of my career,” Lin said.
While riding his scooter home to meet a student for music lessons, a car turned left at a red light and collided with Lin’s scooter. Lin broke her left wrist and suffered internal bleeding.
While in the hospital and recovering at home, Lin felt restless.
“Something was missing and I couldn’t imagine what life would be like without playing music,” she said.
Lin, who is no longer able to play percussion instruments due to a broken wrist, said, “I was looking for something to do during my recovery period after the accident, and I decided to try conducting.”
Lin’s wrist healed, but by then she was fully focused on conducting. If the accident hadn’t happened, I don’t know if I would have chosen this path.
“That was a really big turning point for me,” Lin said. “For me, it was a really important time that changed the way I looked at music and the way I looked at life in general. I think every time I’m on the podium or being with my friends, I’ll really, really treasure it.” You can perform with a group of musicians who love the arts. ”
The Rochester Symphony Orchestra celebrated its season opener earlier this month with Lin as its new music director. Former manager Jere Lantz will retire in 2022 after more than 40 years in office.
In the 2023/2024 season, the finalists were invited to hold a concert.
Clarinetist Karen Hansen said, “There’s something compelling about the way she conducts. She’s so efficient and precise. You know what she wants. She does it. All of us as professionals really appreciate it because it shows us really quickly. Let’s do it,” said clarinetist Karen Hansen. He has been a member of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra since 1991.
Mr. Hansen also served on the search committee.
“She’s very passionate and we felt from the time we were auditioning that she was bringing a lot out of the orchestra musically just with what she showed. Now we’re excited to work with her. “Now I can understand in more detail what she wants to tweak and shape,” Hansen said.
In the season opener, the Rochester Symphony Orchestra’s program “The Immortal Beethoven” showcased “the exhilarating power of music.” The program included Simon’s “Fate Now Conquers”, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.
“Music creates this endless space and place for the imagination. The way I feel may be different than the way you feel, but I truly believe…we are all here, and the struggle… We want to create that cohesive moment, that intimate moment, where you experience that.” And look where Beethoven takes us to the triumphant, celebratory final movement of Beethoven No. 5. I would like to share that there may be struggles, and it may feel like there is a destiny, but Beethoven overcame everything with his art, which is what I really want. To share that with everyone,” Lin said.
When asked if there were any similarities between the show and Lin’s own life, she said with a smile: That inspires me. ”
The Rochester Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, “Sleepers Awake,” will be Nov. 16 and will feature the Rochester Symphony Orchestra Chorale.
Lin also guest conducts in the Twin Cities. In December, he will conduct the Minnesota Orchestra and Tony Deseret.
