Saudi Arabia, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), hosted a donor conference that raised more than $1.1 billion for displaced persons and refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions.
This funding is made possible through contributions from more than 10 donor countries, agencies and organizations dedicated to addressing growing humanitarian needs in these crisis-hit regions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the conference was held in Jeddah in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
NAN also noted that the conference will partner with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the people of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mali facing various crises and natural disasters. It was reported that it was intended to be provided.
Abdullah Al Rabia, Counselor to the Royal Court and Superintendent General of KSrelief, addressed the conference and expressed his gratitude for the generosity shown by donors.

He said the donation not only shows solidarity but also empowers humanitarian organizations to provide life-saving assistance.
He further said that this contribution will further strengthen the safety and resilience of affected populations.

Mr. Al Rabiah affirmed Saudi Arabia’s continued commitment, through KSrelief, to work with international stakeholders to scale up aid operations and ensure that aid is available to those in dire need. .
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Taha said the conference was a demonstration of international solidarity.
He said the forum provided a platform for dialogue among humanitarian leaders and a basis for coordinated and sustainable support to people affected by displacement.
“The presence of so many committed nations and organizations here today demonstrates our shared commitment to the values of solidarity and cooperation,” he said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also praised Saudi Arabia and the OIC for leading the event.
He recognized the region’s potential and the serious challenges it faces from ongoing conflict, climate change and economic tensions.

With more than 30 million people in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions in need of immediate assistance, Mr. Guterres called for sustained humanitarian assistance and investment in long-term solutions.
He also called for an end to hostilities, while calling for the protection of civilians and unimpeded access to aid operations.

According to a report by NAN, Saudi Arabia further strengthens its commitment to the region by pledging an additional $30 million, bringing its total contribution to $51 million in 2024.
