Niger Delta-born human rights and peace advocate, Comrade Sheriff Mlade, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to protect the independence and integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary.
Mr. Mlade emphasized the importance of the judiciary, which is the pillar of democracy and the last hope of the common people.
In a statement released to journalists on Monday, the Emir of Gbaramatu expressed concern over recent controversial rulings in some courts.
He appealed to Tinubu to restore faith in the judiciary, saying:
“Mr. President, it has become necessary to make a formal appeal to save the judiciary, which is the foundation of society and democracy.
“A fair and independent judiciary guarantees fairness, equity and justice for all Nigerians. Without it, our democratic institutions are at risk of collapsing under the weight of political interests. Masu.
“We are deeply concerned about recent decisions that threaten to cause chaos and confusion and undermine respect and confidence in our country’s justice system.
“The Nigerian judiciary has been a beacon of hope not only for Nigerians but also for the African continent.
“However, political interference and vested interests have put the integrity of our judiciary under severe pressure.
“We are witnessing a worrying trend where the judiciary is becoming politicized and certain decisions are driven by political interests rather than the rule of law.”
Mlade also highlighted a pattern of judges, particularly in the Federal and State High Courts, dismissing public interest litigations on technical grounds.
