Veteran Nollywood actress Jumoke George has revealed that her refusal to trade sex for a role kept her away from the film industry for 14 years.
In a recent episode of Oyinmomo TV, the actress also revealed that film directors often complained about her dark skin tone and suggested that she should bleach her skin.
The actress, who returned to acting several years ago, recounted an incident in which she was told by a director that she was being blacklisted because she refused to sleep with him.
She said: “The color of my skin wasn’t the only setback I faced in this business. For 14 years, it was another thing where I couldn’t get any roles or see behind the lens. The reason is that I refused to sleep. They complained about my skin tone that I was too dark. I told them to add lightning to the scene to make me look brighter. he said.
“You can’t force me to do anything I don’t want to do. I’ll shine in this skin until old age, and remember, black never cracks. When an executive asks for a relationship in exchange, I started having problems getting roles, the pressure was getting so high, there were over 20 to 30 people.
“The other thing was that if you dated one of them and broke up and decided to date someone else, they would discuss you among themselves. I told myself that as long as God existed, I wouldn’t be in that space. I had to do that to avoid being passed around among them.
“I didn't get any acting roles for about three years, so I didn't understand what was going on. One day I was at LTV 8’s Feminine Café and one of the directors, I didn't say his name, When I asked him why he didn't call me for roles, he asked, “Jumy, do you want to be in the movie?”
“Then he told me that their director group decided not to call me for the role. And I thought, why not? He said that I refused to sleep with them. He also asked me what good it would be for me to refuse their invitation. I just started crying and he walked out. When I got home, I prayed to God for control.
