With just a few weeks left until the Ondo State gubernatorial election, Social Democratic Party (SDP) deputy governorship candidate Susan Gbemisola Alabi has announced her departure from the party.
Alabi made his decision public after informing Socialist Party gubernatorial candidate Bamidele Akingboye of his intention to resign as his running mate.
Mr Alabi confirmed his resignation with immediate effect in a letter to both Mr Akingboye and the party’s national chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam.
Alabi’s departure from the party raised eyebrows, but he did not reveal the specific reasons for his decision or his future political plans.
The letter dated October 2, 2024 read as follows: “In furtherance of the discussion with you and the advice you gave me on Friday morning, September 20, 2024, I hereby formally resign as Social Democratic Party Deputy Governor Candidate for Ondo State.” 2024 in the gubernatorial election. The resignation is effective immediately.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to ride with you. Your leadership has been inspiring and I have learned a lot on this journey. As you retire, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. I am confident that you will continue to have a significant impact on our great state.”
Similarly, Mr Alabi said in a letter to the SDP National Chairman:
“This decision was not made lightly, as I have valued my time with the party. However, after careful consideration, it is in my best interest to pursue new opportunities and directions. I believe it will.
“Please also note that I have notified the SDP governorship candidate, Mr. Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), of my resignation as the SDP deputy governorship candidate for the 2024 governorship election.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to everyone for your support during my tenure in the SDP. Thank you for your support and friendship at the SDP. I wish the party continued success in its future work. I hope you do.”
