South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has announced the publication of a new remote work visitor visa and points-based work visa system, marking significant reforms in the country’s immigration policy.
The initiative, announced by Home Secretary Leon Shriver, follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s July 2024 mandate to overhaul the visa system to attract skills and boost tourism. The remote work visa is aimed at high-paid foreign workers who can contribute to the South African economy while working remotely for an overseas employer.
The new points-based system introduces a transparent framework for vetting key skills and general work visas, with the aim of combating corruption and streamlining the application process. For general work visas not covered by the Trusted Employer Scheme, the minimum gross annual income threshold is set at R650,796 to protect local jobs while attracting high-end skills.
Research by the Reserve Bank and the International Food Policy Research Institute shows that increasing the high-level skills of just 0.02% of the population could boost annual economic growth by up to 1.2%.
