Nigerian musician Spiro talks about the challenges he faces in the music industry. She used to worry about money, but now she says discrimination is her biggest problem.
In a chat with Echo Room, Spiro talked about how being a Christian artist brings criticism and less support. The singer, known for his hit song “Who Is Your Guy,” said his troubles began when he accepted his “Jesus Boy” identity.

He also mentioned a conversation he had with Banky W, a Nigerian artist-turned-pastor, who talked about how his public declaration of faith changed his musical career. Bunky W explained that he faced criticism and resistance from the industry after choosing to follow Christ.
Spyro may relate to this experience. “My biggest challenge right now is discrimination,” he said. “Ever since I came out as a ‘yes boy,’ I’ve faced a lot of criticism. When I release a song, how many people in the media share and support me? Is it? I don’t pay much for anything other than the blogs I pay for. And yet they promote artists who are not as successful as me. Because when you openly proclaim Christ… Because you will face a backlash.”
Spiro added that it’s tough not getting the same support as other artists, even from people who know his work. Reflecting on Bunky W’s advice, he said Bunky warned him to be prepared for the challenges of standing up for his faith. “Banky said to me, ‘When I was living my wild lifestyle, everything was going well. But the moment I chose to follow God, things got difficult.’ He asked me if I was ready for that. ”
Despite these struggles, Spiro remains committed to his faith and identity as a Christian artist, despite the challenges that come with being in the music world.
