Strengthening EU-Africa space cooperation

This side event will focus on how satellite navigation and Earth observation are important tools for addressing common challenges and driving progress on both continents, and will strengthen the relationship between the EU and Africa in the space sector. We look for expanded cooperation. Space cooperation has become a strategic aspect of EU-Africa relations, not only in addressing common social challenges but also in diplomacy. This event will highlight how these partnerships advance the use of space for peaceful international cooperation and contribute to global stability and security. In line with the spirit of EU-Africa cooperation, the discussion will underline the importance of these partnerships in building a resilient and sustainable future for both Europe and Africa and strengthening relations. Speakers from both continents will present successful joint initiatives and potential for greater synergies.

background:
At the 2023 African Union-European Union Summit, leaders from both continents strengthened their focus on space as a key area of cooperation. Africa and Europe have cooperated for more than 20 years in Earth observation under the GMES and Africa programmes, supporting information services, data access and training, and through satellite data exchange agreements. Since 2010, Africa and Europe have been working with ASECNA to implement the EGNOS-based African Satellite Extension System (ANGA). The SatNav Joint Program Office program aims to extend the benefits of ANGA across sub-Saharan Africa.
