SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WKEF) — On Thursday, Oct. 10, more than 150 Springfield High School students packed meals for children in South Africa’s Kingdom of Lesotho.
The students had a goal of packing 30,000 meals per day of class for the Lesotho Nutrition Initiative (LNI). This is the sixth year the school has hosted the cram event.
Wittenberg University students and faculty founded LNI to provide nutritious meals that can help prevent malnutrition and reverse the long-term effects of the disease.
According to the United Nations, almost half of Lesotho’s population lives below the food poverty line. It was announced that 36% of children under the age of 5 are stunted due to malnutrition.
Springfield City Schools Superintendent Dr. Bob Hill spoke about the importance of this event in a statement.
“This project has many great benefits. The LNI Meal Pack breaks the traditional school experience and directly connects home and other countries by allowing students to perform humanitarian service activities in the school gym. “Students can quickly see the impact that dedicating just a few hours of their day can make.”
