Japan’s atomic bomb survivors’ group Nippon Hidankyo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
“The grassroots movement of survivors of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is recognized for their efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through eyewitness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again. The award committee said the grassroots movement, founded in 1956 in the wake of the August 1945 atomic bomb attacks, had “worked tirelessly” to raise awareness of the devastating humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. Ta.

According to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, 286 candidates have been registered for this year’s prize, of which 197 are individuals and 89 are organizations.
Nobel laureates typically receive 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.06 million), but the amount is shared among multiple winners.
The award committee announced at the time that Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her “fight against the oppression of women and the promotion of human rights and freedoms for all in Iran.” announced.
Mohammadi, known for his work as deputy director and spokesperson for the Human Rights Defense Center, was reportedly sentenced to an additional year in prison in June for his activism.
According to the Associated Press, the Iranian government did not approve her additional sentence at the time.
Defenders of Human Rights Center is an organization that promotes human rights and defends free and fair elections and due process of law. The organization was co-founded by Shirin Ebadi, the only Iranian to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
