Embattled Labor Party (LP) national chairman Julius Habré has threatened to appeal last week’s ruling affirming his leadership by the party's caretaker committee, led by Nenadi Ousmane. I scoffed.
Naija News reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja last week declared valid the controversial national conference that returned Abuja and his National Working Committee (NWC) to power.
However, the Nenadi Usman Interim Committee met with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti before deciding to drag Abre to the Court of Appeal.
In an interview with Punch on Sunday, the Labor Party’s national communications secretary, Obiola Ifor, who supported Abure, said the 29-member management committee, led by Usman, was not informed about the law and therefore lacked standing to challenge the court’s ruling. He claimed that Justifying Habre’s leadership.
Mr Ifor said the Habre-led NWC was not losing sleep over the threat to appeal the verdict.
According to him, neither Obi nor the committee were parties to the incident in the first place.
He said: “You cannot appeal a judgment to which you are not a party, so it would be a shame if they toed that line. Therefore, they don’t even have a trajectory.
“The body was not part of the suit. This case was between the Labor Party and INEC. Therefore, you cannot appeal something that you are not involved in. There is no legal provision in Nigerian law for litigation. There are so many instances where it’s stated that if you’re not a party, you can’t appeal. So they have an alternative, and they might be able to start a new case. The name is not even recognized by law.
“The important thing is that the Labor Party is here, we have had our fair share of crises, and they have been resolved firmly in the interests of the Labor Party. If you don’t like the leadership, you can For now, Julius Habre’s leadership will expire in 2028. That’s what the law says.
