At least six people affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State have been hospitalized after being assaulted by suspected armed assailants in Idanre Local Government Area.
Naija News understands that the incident occurred during a political event on Wednesday, two days before the governorship election.
PDP spokesperson Kennedy Peretei confirmed the incident in a discussion with Daily Trust.
“Yes, some thugs attacked our members in Idanre. Some of them are currently hospitalized,” Peretei said.
He did not provide specific details about the assault, but said it occurred during a rally in the historic town.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Spokesman of the command, Funmilayo Odunlami Omisanya, confirmed the information and indicated that the state Police Commissioner, Oladipo Abayomi, had organized a peace conference with representatives of the two major political parties.
“This incident involved violence and attempted murder and is currently under investigation. We are committed to ensuring those responsible are held accountable and peace is restored to the region, especially at this critical juncture in our state’s history.” Odunlami Omisanya said.
She also reiterated the Commissioner’s warning that the Police Command will not tolerate any actions that may disturb the peace before, during or after the elections.
