If interceptions of Russian radio communications are any indication, the Kremlin is secretly transporting North Korean troops to a Ukrainian-controlled salient in Russia’s Kursk region.
The intercepted conversation, released by the Ukrainian Intelligence Directorate on Sunday and translated by Estonian analyst WarTranslated, confirms what Ukrainian intelligence sources have been conveying in recent days: that thousands of North Korean soldiers are moving along Russia’s western front lines. This seems to confirm that the market is starting to arrive.
The intercepted conversation between two Russian military officials concerned the driver of a KAMAZ truck named Andrei Sveridenko, who was stopped on the way to Kursk. On August 6, strong Ukrainian forces invaded Kursk, quickly occupying hundreds of square miles.
Russian gendarmes “detained part of the KAMAZ on the highway" in the Kursk region, one of the radio exchange’s employees explained to the person in charge.
The truck’s number 497 is “a civilian number,” the first official said. The military police were “concerned” because the vehicle “had no combat mission.”
Another employee replied, “I’ll figure it out.” He reported that Sveridenko was “assisting in the transfer of North Koreans.”
“Oh, that’s why he’s not on combat duty,” the first official said. In other words, the deployment of North Korean troops to Kursk was unplanned – not surprising, given that the Kremlin has described reports about North Korean troops in Russia as “fake news.”
According to WarTranslated, the North Korean soldiers commissioned by Sveridenko were sent to the Russian Navy’s 810th Naval Infantry Brigade, which was tasked with intercepting advancing Ukrainian forces at the eastern end of the Kursk salient around the village of Russkaya Konopelka. I was trying to get him to retreat. So far, Ukrainian drones and artillery have held off Russian forces.
Marine units such as the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade were notorious for their brutality and poor discipline. On October 10, the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, located on the western edge of the Kursk salient, captured, stripped, and executed nine Ukrainian drone operators.
Since then, four elite Ukrainian brigades have deliberately cornered and ambushed a platoon of the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, taking no prisoners.
If the Ukrainian Intelligence Directorate’s radio intercepts indicate widespread movement of North Korean troops into Kursk, it is probably only a matter of time before we find direct evidence of North Korean troops participating in the fighting. The first piece of evidence could even be a video of a North Korean being attacked by a Ukrainian drone.
