South Africa's Kyle Belin celebrates 100 years in Mirpur (Tanbin Tamin)
A century after wicketkeeper Kyle Bellin came on in the first Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur on Tuesday, South Africa were 308 all out, extending their first-innings lead to 202.
Although Bangladesh were reduced to 19-2 at tea time on the second day, they still needed 183 wickets to avoid an innings loss, but Kagiso Rabada quickly took two wickets.
Shadman Islam was caught at short leg in the third over and became the opener.
Three balls later, Mominul Haq edged and Wian Mulder took a sharp catch at third slip.
Veraine was the last out in South Africa’s first innings, hitting eight fours and two sixes for 114.
He responded to Bangladesh’s first innings 106 and scored 119 for the seventh wicket alongside Mulder who made 54.
This was South Africa’s highest seven-wicket stand against Bangladesh after the match restarted at 140 for six.
Dane Peat, who was dismissed LBW for 32 by Mehdi Hasan Millers, partnered Berain in a 66-run stand for the ninth wicket.
Bangladesh’s quick bowler Hasan Mahmud took two wickets in two balls in 65 overs and was the only bright spot in the morning session as South Africa added 103.
With a sharp delivery to the off-stump, Mulder edged Shadman Islam at slip, and Hasan’s reverse-swing delivery sent it flying past Keshav Maharaj’s off-stump, ducking late to beat the bat.
Hasan finished with 3 wins and 66 losses, Mehidi with 2 wins and 63 losses, and the innings ended only when Bereine stumbled after 144 pitches.
On Monday, South African quick bowler Kagiso Rabada became the fastest to reach 300 Test wickets as Bangladesh collapsed after winning the toss and electing to bat.
Rabada reached the landmark with 11,817 balls, breaking Pakistan’s Waqar Younis’ previous record of 12,602 balls.
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam finished with 5 wins and 122 losses and crossed the 200 Test wicket mark, becoming the second Bangladeshi to achieve this feat after Shakib Al Hasan.
Bangladesh have never beaten South Africa in a Test and the second match of the two-match series begins on October 29 in Chattogram.
