People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Segun Sowunmi has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to abandon plans to declare a state of emergency in OSUN.
Speaking about the politics of channel television today on Wednesday, Sowunmi has dismissed speculation about such a move.
He states: For what? (Former President Goodluck) Jonathan declared no state of emergency when all of Chibok’s shenangans and even all of them, when Vice President (Kasim Shettima) was Governor of Borno. ”
Naija News understands that the comments will follow the Federal Government’s call on Monday by APC Secretary of State Ajibola Basiru to impose emergency rules on OSUN due to the local government crisis.
Rejecting the proposal, Saunmi argued that the dominant APC should not try to curb opposition in an effort to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, an emergency is a situation in which normal constitutional procedures are suspended to restore order in an era of national dangers and disasters. Grants the President the authority to implement immediate regulations on public safety.
The Osun crisis has resulted in at least six deaths since Monday following a fierce clash between APC and PDP members over local government council control.
Before the violence, Osun State Governor Ademora Adeleke raised concerns on Sunday, claiming that APC members were trying to seize control of the council office, gaining support from security agencies. Adeleke, who belongs to the PDP, had urged President Bora Tinubu to intervene in by former governor and current minister APC Gboyega Oyetola to prevent escalation.
Sowunmi criticized the federal government for failing to act when Adeleke first issued the alarm, claiming that safety measures should be taken to prevent bloodshed.
“The governor was screaming that things weren’t looking normal. Call Oyetola to order, but the next thing you see is Brigandage. When he fires the alarm, he has this kind of blood. “To prevent the victim from being hit, he should have been given everything humanely possible as the state’s chief security officer,” he said.
He further emphasized that the opposition parties would not tolerate attempts to curb political diversity.
The PDP chief said: – Putting politics aside. I don’t like people who say this country will be in a one-party state.
