A new hiking trail in South Africa's Western Cape wants visitors to take it slow and steady to soak up its beauty.
According to a press release, the trail was launched on World Tourism Day in late September. This innovative path is officially named Damara Trail. Cape Nature, the state government organization that runs the trail, touts it as the first “slow hiking” trail of its kind in South Africa.
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the slow and peaceful pace of the Damara Trail within the Des Monde Nature Reserve. The two-day hike is suitable for all fitness levels, ages 8 and up. On your first day, you’ll hike to where you’ll pitch your tent for the night. It is approximately 5.1 miles and is expected to take 1 hour and 45 minutes. CapeNature says the relaxing sleeping area is soothing with “the sounds of the ocean.” On the second day, hikers trek twice the ground covered on the first day. The “scenic coastal route” takes you to the seaside town of Arniston in approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes.
“Unlike other strenuous hikes, this two-day route features gentle slopes, smooth terrain, and scenic rest stops along the route,” says CapeNature.
What else should I know about slow hiking the Damara Trail?
Explorers will feast their eyes on “interpretive signs” with educational and fun facts about the reserve’s flora and fauna. The guide also teaches readers about the associated cultures, geological formations, and more.
“This hike allows people to connect with nature at a slower pace and fully enjoy their surroundings,” said CapeNature CEO Dr. Ashley Naidoo. “We pride ourselves on constantly innovating our tourism product through our accommodation and hiking offerings. It is sure to be a popular activity.”
Reservations for the Damara Trail are currently being accepted.
