Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd) has urged Nigerians to think beyond regional interests and focus on the country as a whole.
He explained that it is essential to take the best from all ideologies and apply it for the greater good.
The 90-year-old elder statesman said this on Wednesday when he hosted the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor and Sardaunan-Kano Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, in Abuja.
He explained that he refused to align himself with any political party in the country or engage in partisan politics as he was more focused on Nigeria as a whole.
According to a Naija News report, General Gowon ruled Nigeria as a military leader for nine years before being ousted by the military junta led by General Ibrahim Babangida.
Since then, he has refused to engage with the country’s multiparty democracy, unlike some military leaders who have been politically active.
“I encourage others to think beyond local interests and focus on Nigeria as a whole. Differences of opinion are natural, but nothing prevents us from working together to solve problems for the good of the country. It must not be.
“I have always believed in taking the best from other ideologies, whether socialism or capitalism, and applying them for the greater good. While I was in power, Although we valued diverse perspectives, decisions were always taken in the interest of the people and the nation,” Gowon said.
He said his guests’ mission is not just to return to the old mentality of North-for-North, West-for-West and East-for-East until the Midwest thinks for itself. expressed hope.
