Mr Esosa Iyawe, a member of the House of Representatives for Oredo Constituency in Edo State, said his defection from the Labor Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was in line with his political interests.
Naija News reported that Iyawe and three other members of the House of Representatives from the LP defected to the ruling APC citing a leadership crisis.
Mr Esosa Iyawe noted that he was displeased by the leadership crisis in the Labor Party and the numerous lawsuits against the leadership.
The 10th member of the House of Representatives, the first since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, said in a statement Thursday that his decision to leave the party was the result of consultation with his family and constituents.
“I am writing to formally submit my resignation with immediate effect as a member of the Labor Party (LP). This decision is based on my personal beliefs and the alignment of my values with today’s political climate. The decision was made after careful consideration.
“My decision to resign from the LP is the result of the party's inability to declare who will emerge as a legitimate caretaker committee from the national level to the state level. All the more so because of the infighting and the numerous and persistent court cases against the party's leadership. Both myself and my supporters are in a state of confusion regarding the stability of the party's leadership.
“Regarding my right to freedom of association as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended. I would like to inform you of my resignation to the Progressive Congress (APC). This was done after thorough consultation with my family and supporters,” Iyawe said.
But he thanked LP for giving him the platform. He praised the party’s contribution to the country’s democracy.
“I hereby reiterate my determination to continue my service and representation of the people of the country, as this decision will certainly enhance my previous accomplishments at all levels.”
“I would like to thank the leadership and fellow members of the Labor Party (LP) for the support, cooperation and opportunities given to me during my time as a member. I am grateful and respectful to the party’s hard work and contribution to our democracy. I am leaving office with this,” Iyawe added.
