Tems made history as the first African female artist to reach a billion Spotify streams with Future’s “Wait for U.” The track sampling Broken Ears’ “Higher” from Tems’ “Higher” 2020 EP appeared on Future’s 2022 Billboard 200 chart topping album. “Wait For U” took No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Tems’ first chart topper in all genres, breaking through Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs and rhythmic airplay charts. He received a Grammy nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song in 2023, winning the former and giving Tem his first Grammy Award. She recently secured her second Grammy win with “Love Me Jeje” for Africa’s best musical performance.
Tems’ success continues in 2025. She recently became part of the ownership group at the San Diego Football Club through her company The Leading Vibe. She will also be headlines giving away stages at SXSW London at Troxi in Shoreditch, London on June 5th.
“Wait For U” was the 21st entry to Spotify’s Millions Club, the 2016 hit “One Dance” (featuring Wizkid and Kyla), and it was the first song to surpass the 1 billion Spotify stream. It is also the fourth entry in Future. This milestone follows Rema’s “Calm Down” (Remix featuring Remix), which will become the first African artist-led track to reach a billion Spotify streams in September 2023.
