A shooting incident in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba left a female police officer dead and 10 others injured, local authorities said.
The attacker was shot dead at the scene after what police said was a “suspected terrorist attack” at the city’s central bus station.
The victim’s name has been released as Sheila Chaya Surik, a sergeant with the Israeli Border Police.
Israeli emergency services said medical workers were treating 10 injured people, some of whom had gunshot wounds.
Emergency services said one of the injured was in a “moderate to serious" condition and the other four were in a “moderate” condition.
They were taken to nearby Soroka Hospital.
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the perpetrator was “eliminated within seconds by security forces” who were at the scene.
Immediately after the attack, Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev called for the families of the “terrorists” to be deported.
“The time has come for deterrent punishment to prevent attacks on Israeli territory,” she wrote to X.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid described the attack as “serious and despicable” and wrote to X: “We must act decisively against terrorism.”
Seven people were killed in Tel Aviv last week when a gunman opened fire on civilians in a shooting and knife attack in the Jaffa neighborhood.
Israeli authorities have announced that they are putting the entire country on high alert ahead of the one-year anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel that triggered the current war in Gaza.
