The Zenith Labor Party (ZLP) won 15 of the 17 local government areas in Abia State in the November 2 local government elections.
Meanwhile, the Youth Party (YPP) won the remaining two local councils.
Naija News reports that the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Professor George Chima, announced the results on Saturday at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.
“We took office on September 5th and fulfilled our duty.
“It was not an easy task, but we went above and beyond to raise awareness about the election across the state,” Chima said.
Underscoring the importance of elections, he said, “Recently, this commission has not held an election involving more than 12 political parties. This in itself is a milestone for the commission.”
Mr Chima said the elections held in all 17 local governments in the state were “free, fair and credible”.
“We were able to complete work within two months that would normally take six to 12 months,” he added.
The Chairman congratulated both the winners and the opponents and stressed the need to maintain peace in Abia.
“Every election has winners and losers, but the most important thing is that Abia maintains peace. I urge you to protect this peace,” he said.
He also thanked security services for their support and praised political parties for “playing by the rules”.
