Thirteen people were shot, one fatally, during a party at a venue in Oklahoma early Saturday morning, police said.
The violence in southwest Oklahoma City was one of more than 410 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, according to statistics from the Gun Violence Archive. The nonpartisan archive defines a mass shooting as a mass shooting in which four or more victims are injured or killed.
These high rates of mass shootings have led many to call for stronger federal gun control, but Congress has largely failed to heed these pleas. They can’t or won’t listen.
Lt. Valerie Littlejohn of the Oklahoma City Police Department said in an email that around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a disturbance resulted in multiple shots being fired inside and outside the private venue in question.
Littlejohn could not immediately provide information about the victims, other than to say at least two people were in critical condition at the hospital.
No suspects have yet been identified, but several people were taken into custody after the shooting and investigators are interviewing witnesses, Littlejohn said.
