A total of 11 political parties have signed a peace agreement to promote a non-violent and fair electoral process in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 9 in Plateau State.
Naija News reports that the peace agreement was facilitated by the Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency (PPBA) in collaboration with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).
During the event, PPBA Executive Director Julie Sanda said the main purpose of the peace agreement is to encourage political parties and their supporters to engage in peaceful action before, during and after elections.
She said, “This platform provides our commitment to the principles of peace and democracy. The Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency (PPBA), in collaboration with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) and other stakeholders We remain committed to taking proactive steps to prevent violence in all electoral processes in the state, including promoting peace, fostering dialogue, and ensuring transparency in the process. ”
In remarks at the event, Governor Caleb Mutofan, speaking on behalf of Lieutenant Governor Josephine Pillot, said, “The parliamentary elections will be the best in the country.
“We affirm that every vote counts. We believe this peace exercise will further deepen our efforts to ensure peace in the nation.”
PLASIEC Chairman Pranji Chishak also called on supporters of all political parties to abide by the rule of law and avoid violence before, during and after the exercise.
