Police say a shotgun, a loaded handgun, ammunition and several fake passports were loaded into a car at a security checkpoint outside a Donald Trump rally in the Southern California desert on Saturday night. A man was arrested. He was released the same day on $5,000 bail. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said the suspect, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, was driving an unregistered black SUV with a “homemade” license plate and was assigned to a rally in Coachella, east of Los Angeles. At a press conference, he was stopped by police officers.
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump sought Sunday to shore up political support among what they perceive to be an essential voting bloc. Opinion polls show they are certain to be in a close race in the November 5 presidential election.
President Trump on Sunday promised to hire 10,000 additional Border Patrol agents if re-elected. The Republican presidential candidate said he would achieve his goal by asking the U.S. Congress to issue a 10% pay raise and a $10,000 retention and signing bonus for Border Patrol agents, a key election battleground.
Harris held a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, where she attacked her rivals for spreading misinformation about hurricanes Helen and Milton. “From him we’re just hearing the same old, tired playbook,” she said. “He has no plan for how to meet the needs of the American people. He’s only focused on himself.”
Harris and Trump are expected to arrive in Pennsylvania later today. Ms. Harris is speaking in Erie, and Mr. Trump is speaking at the Stump in Oaks, a small community about 32 miles from Philadelphia.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said passing additional hurricane aid for states affected by Hurricanes Helen and Milton “can wait” until Congress reconvenes after the election.
Three major polls were released Sunday showing Kamala Harris either ahead of Donald Trump or in a close race.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have spoken out about a number of crises, from pocket economic issues and reproductive rights to the strength of the country’s global alliances and existential questions about the future of American democracy and the planet. They present two completely different visions for this country, which is on the brink of crisis.
As they vie for the White House, both candidates have made their plans known in speeches, campaign ads and media interviews. Most amount to wish lists, roughly sketched but lacking concrete details on how they will be implemented and paid for. While many of Mr. Trump’s proposals raise legal questions, some of Ms. Harris’ proposals likely require Democratic control of Congress.
You can see where they stand on important issues here.

Donald Trump will speak later today in Oaks, Pennsylvania. News of the event posted on President Trump’s website gives a taste of what the candidate will say.
Pennsylvania voters are well aware of the disastrous policies of the Harris-Biden administration. Because of Kamala’s inflation crisis, Pennsylvanians are paying nearly $1,000 more each month for the same basket of goods. At the same time, hard-working Pennsylvanians are taking home less real wages and more credit card debt. Thanks to the Harris-Biden administration’s crackdown on American Energy and Pennsylvania’s fracking, gasoline and diesel prices have reached historic highs.
More broadly, Pennsylvania has been a victim of biased American trade agreements that have allowed foreign adversaries to hollow out our industry. Thanks to the meaningless doctrine of “free trade,” countless factories have closed and countless more quality American jobs have been lost.
The Trump-Vance administration will pick up where the first Trump administration left off and foster America’s resurgence of strong job growth, low inflation, and everyday prosperity in Pennsylvania. President Trump will return to rewriting America’s flawed trade agreements to unleash Pennsylvania’s energy and support Pennsylvania’s industrial might that built America.

U.S. officials said they were monitoring Chinese military exercises around Taiwan.
China has launched its latest war game around the democratically-ruled island in response to Taiwan President Lai Ching-de’s speech last week. Lai said China and Taiwan are not “mutually dependent” and China “has no right to represent Taiwan.”
“We urge China to act with restraint and avoid further actions that could undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader region, which is essential to regional peace and prosperity and is of international concern. We ask that you do so,” the State Department said. Spokesman Matthew Miller said, using the initials of China’s official name, the People’s Republic of China.

President Trump promises to hire 10,000 more Border Patrol agents if elected
Donald Trump on Sunday pledged to hire 10,000 more Border Patrol agents if re-elected as president, increasing his tough stance on immigration, according to Reuters.
The Republican presidential candidate said he would achieve his goal by asking Congress to give Border Patrol agents, a key election battleground, a 10% pay raise and a $10,000 retention and signing bonus. Currently, there are approximately 20,000 Border Patrol agents, and the pledge will significantly increase the number of troops.
“This will ensure that we can hire and retain the Border Patrol agents we need,” the former president said on stage, surrounded by Border Patrol union leaders who supported Trump.
President Trump has significantly stepped up his anti-immigrant rhetoric in the final weeks of the campaign. Last month, he called undocumented immigrants in the United States who commit violent crimes “monsters,” “stone-cold murderers” and “despicable animals.” On Friday, he called for the death penalty to be imposed on “any immigrant” who kills a U.S. citizen.
Critics argue that President Trump’s rhetoric reinforces racist tropes, but studies generally show no evidence that immigrants commit crimes at higher rates than native-born Americans. I know there isn’t.
