Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, has condemned the plan to establish the Nigerian Coast Guard.
Naija News reported that the proposed guard is aimed at protecting maritime areas across Nigeria.
Oshiomhole, in Tuesday’s plenary session, asserted that the Nigerian Navy is already fulfilling this role assigned to the Nigerian Coast Guard.
The lawmaker referred to the previous establishment of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), which he said were not needed.
According to him, “This is how we established the National Road Safety Commission at great expense. When I was a child, that job was carried out by the Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force. But it was more efficient than it is now.
“To all of you who travel on the roads, I don’t know if the Traffic Safety Committee will help you or not, but the Traffic Safety Committee has been established.
“Thus, we established the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps to protect pipelines and government assets. At this point, we do not know whether the property is safe or not.
“Issues like this should be brought up to the National Security Advisor and senior leadership. Only they can tell us whether another agency is needed, but for now our mission is to strengthen the Navy.” I think we should try to do that.”
