Last week, Amazon Music held a reception at the National Museum of African American Music to kick off Amazon’s “Delivering the Future” event and highlight the company’s investment in Tennessee and focus on innovation.
During the event, Amazon Music General Manager Ryan Reddington discussed key priorities for the music sector and highlighted Amazon’s commitment to customer-centric innovation. He also explained how the company leverages its global platform to support artists.
Redington introduced Maestro, Amazon Music’s new AI-powered playlist generator. A beta version is currently available for some US users. Maestro allows users to create playlists by inputting various elements such as mood, emojis, activities, and sounds. For example, if a user requests something like “hip-hop from the Myspace era,” Maestro will curate a corresponding playlist.

“From the prompt, we use an extensive language model to help us interpret what the customer is actually asking. We then use the model to determine what kind of response we should give. You have to figure out what you have and combine that with your music catalog to actually create a set of songs,” Regington told MusicRow after the event. “It’s very complex on the back end, but for the customer it takes seconds and feels like magic.”
Reddington also touched on the growth of Amazon Music’s live streaming, particularly through programs like Amazon Music Live. He highlighted the partnership with Thursday Night Football, which allows artists to perform after the game and reach a large audience.
“Live streaming, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, was born out of necessity,” Reddington said. “We got great feedback from our customers, and the artists loved it so much that we realized it could actually become a (bigger) business for us. “Live streaming allows artists to promote themselves through Thursday Night Football, one of the most-watched shows any week during football season,” Reddington said. “There artists will give interviews, talk about new music, and engage their viewer base in the livestream. As part of Country Music Month, Amazon is compiling a ton of content related to the streaming service’s other flagship playlist, Bonfire.
