The decision allows Damagum to maintain his position amid ongoing factionalism within the party.

In response, Mr. Ologunagba said the NWC had suspended Mr. Damagumu and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, for breach of trust and subsequently appointed the National Treasurer, Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, as the Acting National Chairman.
“The minister is not happy with the decision to reinstate the suspended NWC members,” said the source, who also spoke anonymously to the Punch-on-Wike camp. It was well known that they were undermining Wike’s interests and Wike wanted them removed from the party. Wike supports Damagum and will continue to do so. ”
Meanwhile, Atiku’s 2019 presidential election campaign spokesperson Umar Sani clarified that Damagum does not need to leave the party and should return to his old position as National Vice-Chairman (Northern).
In an exclusive interview with Punch on Wednesday, Sani said this was in line with the party’s constitution.
He said: “We’re not saying he should leave. He’s not going anywhere. He’s just returning to the status quo of an elected position. No one has any interest in him leaving. I’m not, and I’m not provoking him.
“What we’re saying is that North Central was elected to that position because of fairness, equity and justice, and it’s North Central who will get it done. That's what our party’s constitution says. It’s a position.”
