The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vehemently opposed the local government elections held in Kaduna State on Saturday, claiming the exercise did not take place as claimed.
Voting in Tudun Wada area of Kaduna South Local Government began late, with reports saying it began much later than the scheduled start time, around 3:30 p.m.
“The election materials were brought to local government offices without contacting the party’s agents, and there were no results tables among them,” PDP spokeswoman Maria Dogo said in a telephone interview. This is unacceptable and we want to convey to the public that local government elections were not held in Kaduna. ”
Reacting to the allegations, Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM) Chairman Hajiya Hajara Mohammed assured the public that steps were being taken to prevent manipulation of the election results.
He called on politicians to refrain from inciting violence or spreading hate speech, and called on all political parties to work with the commission to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
A total of 79 chairperson candidates from 10 political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labor Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were scheduled to participate in the election. However, the opposition’s claims have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
