With six Grands Prix remaining this season and two sprints remaining, it’s no wonder you start to wonder when things will be decided and how they’ll turn out.
Max Verstappen heads into today’s Grand Prix with a 54 point lead over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings. This would be more than two race wins (25 points) plus a bonus point for each fastest lap (1 point) if Verstappen does not finish inside the top 10.
Six GP wins, two sprint race wins and six fastest laps mean there are still 172 points left for one driver to score, highlighting just how far we are from the decisive moment. I’m doing it.
With Norris trailing (52 points) ahead of the weekend in Austin, he had to outscore Verstappen by about nine points each race weekend to take the checkered flag in Abu Dhabi.
For context, the difference between first and third place in a Grand Prix is 10 points.
Despite Norris’ recent good form, he still couldn’t match Verstappen’s point scoring rate. This is despite the relatively short sample size.
And of course, Saturday’s sprint resulted in him losing two points to Verstappen in Austin.
