Voices of Our City looks like a typical choir. However, when we talked to the members, we found that they have one thing in common: they study in addition to singing.
Each voice in this choir brings a unique sound.
And each person has their own story.
Patricia Williams said, “In 90 days I lost my career, my son, my home, everything I owned.”
That’s how she ended up in San Diego. Her daughter was in the Navy and she had left a note for her in Ohio.
However, finding a place to live or a job was not easy. She spent 10 years looking for stable housing.
she says: “I was on the street, on the beach…connecting with people I didn’t know.”
Despite having a Ph.D. and more than 10 years of education, Williams was unable to find a job.
she says: “I applied to 123 applications within the district and none of the 123 were accepted.”
She ended up on the doorstep of the nonprofit Voices of Our City.
This group connects homeless people with the resources they need.
And they use music to help people get their lives back, creating programs like this choir.
Lindsey Seegers of Voices of Our City says, “Everyone has one thing in common: they never expected to be homeless, and they all have a creative spark in their hearts.” Masu.
The choir has performed on stages throughout the county, won special awards in singing contests, and appeared in Hollywood.
And while this choir is starting to make a name for itself, for Patricia it’s about the message they can share with others.
Williams added, “They empower us to be who we are, and they don’t judge us for who we are.”
The Voices of Our City choir will perform Saturday to raise money for nonprofit organizations.
