NPR Music’s Ann Powers and Hazel Sills are your guide to the week’s most exciting new releases. This week, that list includes Banjo Hero’s album, which is full of mythological inspiration. The Nashville-based indie songwriter’s work shifts from a swirling sonic realm to a more streamlined (if not exactly stripped-down) sound. There are many more, including the work of a veteran British folk singer who found inspiration after becoming a mother.
MORE: Do you feel like the way musicians are getting their music out into the world is getting more creative, and maybe even more elusive? Earlier this summer, Jack White released a surprise solo album, No Name. ”, which was initially available only on vinyl and was only available for free if purchased at record stores affiliated with his label, Third Man. A new album by mysterious British duo Two Shells will be widely released this week, but it hasn’t been available for months on flash drives, left on dance club floors or sold via the group’s Bandcamp page. It was sometimes buried inside a rock. Are these artists disrupting the streaming ecosystem? Are they emphasizing the importance of physical media? Do they just want to create memorable experiences for their fans? Whatever it is, we accept it.
