COLE GROVE, Ohio (WSAZ) – If you look at the marching band members and think they look younger every year, you’ll be right when you watch a Coal Grove Hornets game.
Musical prodigy Griffin Lackey is a fourth-grader at Dawson Bryant Elementary School and a standout percussionist in the varsity band on Friday nights.
He says he can play multiple instruments, including bagpipes.
This is Band Director Karen Jarvis’ first year in this role. She said she was happy to be able to take over from her 9-year-old son, who surprised the former coach with his abilities beyond his years.
“He came to rehearsals and started showing interest,” Jarvis said. "[The previous director]was surprised and said, ‘Would you like to come out with the band on Friday night?'”
“The band is my life,” Lackey said. “Actually, I like it.”
“I’m so proud and happy to see a little guy like Griffin come out and find joy and passion in music,” Jarvis said.
Lackey said he plans to dress up as Georgia founder James Oglethorpe for trick-or-treating next week.
