Former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mftwang and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from the North-Central region will complete their terms as the party’s national chairman. They are demanding that they be returned to their areas.
Naija News reports that PDP leaders made the appeal in a communiqué released after a stakeholder meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday.
The meeting included Governor Caleb Mkhtwane, former Senate President David Mark and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Governor Gabriel Suswam (Benue), former Governor Jonah Jan (Plateau), former Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara). ), prominent PDP officials including former Governor Babangida Aliyu (Niger) attended. Mr. Idris Wada (Kogi), and the party’s National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kamaludeen Ajibade (SAN), among others.
Recall that the PDP was facing internal divisions that worsened before and after the 2023 general elections.
The party’s acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, has been criticized for failing to deal with the protracted crisis, further weakening the PDP’s influence.
Mr. Damagumu assumed the position after a court dismissed former chairman Iyorukia Ayu for failing to enact necessary reforms.
However, during the meeting, PDP North Central leaders insisted that the chairmanship should be returned to the zone to complete its term.
The PDP leaders also urged stakeholders to build consensus, stressing that unity and peace are essential to the future of the party.
“People’s Democratic Party officials reviewed the current state of the party, with particular reference to the vacancy of the party’s national committee chair following the resignation of Senator Iyorukia Ayu,” the communiqué said.
“The PDP constitution stipulates that regarding the succession of offices at all levels within the party, pursuant to Article 47(6) of the party constitution, vacant positions may be replaced by appointments from the zone.
“The party leadership must rise to the opportunity of restoring goodwill and unity, making the necessary sacrifices and compromises.In light of this, stakeholders in the North-Central Zone must stand up for the goodwill and goodwill of their compatriots in other zones. He is appealing for the chairmanship to be restored to the North Central Zone in order to complete his term.
