The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) North and South Band Executive Committee has suspended Zornal secretary Felix Omem for a month on alleged fraud and fraudulent media statements.
Omem had previously declared the North-South ZEC conference held in Benin, Edo, illegal. In a statement from Yenagor, Bayelsa province, he argued that the meeting convened by South South Vice-Chair Dan Orbi was unconstitutional because it lacked approval from the Zone Working Committee.
Suspension movement and disciplinary action
At the ZEC meeting in Benin, Martin Amawell, a faction speaker in the Rivers State Legislature, moved the motion to stop Omem.
The movement was supported by Hon. Godwin Offiono, a member representing the House of Representatives' Ogoja/Yala constituency.
Amaewhule said: Omem’s actions are illegal, and are an attempt to cause dissociation and discourage members from attending the North-South ZEC meeting in Benin. ”
Following the suspension, George Tarn, the legal counsel of the PDP Zone, was appointed acting secretary of Zonal.
Orbih praises ZEC’s decision
Dan Obi praised the ZEC for a halt and described it as a necessary step to repositioning the party and maintaining unity.
“The move is intended to curb the excesses of leaders and members trying to disrupt party harmony,” Obi said.
The meeting was attended by the chairman of the zones, senators and House members of five North and South states except Akwa Ibom.
