Political analysts believe that former Kaduna governor Nasir El Rufai’s exile from the All Progressive Congress (APC) to the Social Democrats (SDP) could have been triggered by his longtime political opponents returning to the party of control.
El Rufai has a history of intense political battles with figures such as Suleiman Osman Hankui and Shef Sani, who were once an APC member but died to other officials after clashing with him.
Hunkuyi moved to the new Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) after fallout with El-Rufai, and Shehu Sani died in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, Daily Sun noted that recent developments suggest that a return to APC played a role in El-Rufai’s decision to leave.
El-Rufai’s departure from the APC came less than 24 hours after Shehu Sani openly declared support for Governor Uba Sani’s re-election bid in 2027.
Reports show that the return of major Kaduna politicians, including Senators Suleiman Hankui, Senator Danjuma Raa and former Governor Ramaran Yello, has further destabilized El Rufai’s position in the party by others to the APC.
Shehu Sani has made it clear that his biggest political priorities for 2027 ensure that Governor Uba Sani secures a second term.
Rather than staying with the APC and facing an evolving political landscape, Elf-Fai officially announced his resignation from the party in a Facebook post Monday, showing a change in his political strategy.
In response to Elle Rufai’s exile in telephone conversations, Shea Sani dismissed the move as insignificant, claiming that Elle Rufai no longer has any significant political influence.
“El-Rufai leaving the APC for SDP will not make a difference again for those who are not politically relevant. But one thing is certain, Chairman Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani will be voted again,” Shehu Sani said.
