LONDON (WKRC) – Pink Floyd has reportedly sold its music catalog, name and likeness rights to Sony Music for $400 million.
British rock band Pink Floyd has reportedly sold its recorded music catalog, name and image rights to Sonic Music, sources tell Variety. The outlet reported that it was one of the biggest deals in recent years and had apparently been finalized despite decades of infighting between the band members.
The most notable feud is between chief songwriters Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Drummer Nick Mason is also involved, along with keyboardist Richard Wright and the estate of founding singer-songwriter Roger “Syd” Barrett.
According to Variety, the deal with Sony Music includes the following:
Rights to Pink Floyd’s recorded music Rights to Pink Floyd’s name and likeness (including merchandise, theatrical, and similar rights)
According to the media report, the deal does not include songwriting rights held by individual writers.
Pink Floyd’s band members were well known for keeping their individual personalities out of the spotlight. The artwork featured on their albums was primarily designed by the British company Hipgnosis. Variety reported that those works are also included in the contract.
The band members and Sony Music representatives declined Variety’s requests for comment, the paper said.
According to Variety, Sony Music has spent more than $1 billion in recent years buying a catalog of rights to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Queen outside of North America.
