A Katsina State High Court has dismissed a suit seeking the removal of Umaru Ilya Damagum as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Naija News reported that the suit was filed by Ibrahim Musa, a member of the PDP, and is aimed at challenging the appointment of Mr. Damagum.
He argued that the removal of National Chairman Iyorkia Ayu was unconstitutional.
Mr Musa argued that Ayu’s successor should have been chosen from the North-Central geopolitical zone, where Ayu is from.
However, Judge Abdullahi Bawafaskari ruled that the matter was an internal party matter and dismissed the case.
The judge ruled that the issue was outside the court’s jurisdiction.
In his judgment, he upheld the preliminary objections raised by the first and second defendants and declared that the action was “not justiciable” as it concerned exclusively the issues of the parties.
“This matter belongs entirely to the party’s internal affairs and the court has no jurisdiction,” Justice Bawa Faskari said.
PDP crisis: “Mr. Atiku joins plan to oust Mr. Damagum as party chairman”
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly given his support to the removal of the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umaru Damagum.
Punch said Atiku contacted members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) advocating for Damagum’s ouster.
The move to exclude Damagum divided the opinions of the 13 state governors who were elected on the platform of the PDP. Seven governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, are calling for Damagum’s removal, while four others, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, support his retention.
The pro-Damagum governors are allies of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who is at odds with the PDP Governors Forum.
A PDP NWC official, who requested anonymity, told the aforementioned publication that the 2023 PDP flagbearer is in touch with some anti-Damagam forces and other party officials.
Officials said: Important leaders of the party, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, spoke to some of us. ”
When asked what Atiku conveyed to the anti-Damagum NWC members, the official said: “I can confirm that Atiku has spoken to some of us. He has assured us that we are not alone and that he supports the pursuit of justice, equity and equity. He encouraged us to stay motivated and continue to insist that the PDP constitution be followed in the day-to-day decisions of the NWC. He understands and agrees with us why we want Damagum to be removed. I didn’t.
“We have no personal issues with Damagumu. Our goal is to protect the party so that Nigerians have a choice in future elections. Mr. Damagumu respects the constitution and traditions of the party. He should return to his original role as Deputy National Chairman (Northern) and allow North Central to promptly appoint a successor.
Another source close to Atiku claimed that the former vice president wants Damagum to be replaced in accordance with the PDP constitution.
“Mr Atiku is working with NWC members and other committed party leaders to ensure that the right action is taken to uphold the party constitution,” the official said.
Regarding whether Mr. Atiku wants Damagum to be removed, the official explained: The former vice president focuses on democracy and PDP. Atiku likes to work carefully to repair what is broken. ”
