POTSDAM — The Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York, will feature talented students and world-renowned faculty artists in a series of live performances scheduled this month.
All performances are free and open to the public.
The Crane Symphonic Band and the Crane Concert Band will take to the stage for a joint performance at Hosmer Hall on Thursday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. Performances include Kevin Day, Carol Brittin Chambers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Chen Yi, Arthur Frackenpohl, Bob Margolis, Alfred Reed, Frank Ticelli, Joni Green, Vincent Persichetti, Includes works by Jennifer Jolie and Omar Thomas. The Crane Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Brian K. Doyle, is SUNY Potsdam’s oldest wind orchestra. The Crane Concert Band is conducted by Jill Nelson Roberts and its origins date back to the early days of the Special Music Department at Potsdam Normal School.
A special faculty recital entitled “‘Her’ Stories: Music by Women in the 19th and 20th Century” will be held at the Sarah M. Snell Music Theater on Sunday, October 6 at 3 p.m. The concert will feature clarinetists Dr. Julian Kirk Doyle and Dr. Christine Horning, and pianists Dr. Julie Miller and Dr. Kayler Castella. The recital will include works by Elisabeth Sachs von Mainengen, Caroline Schleicher-Kremer, Clara Schumann, Ida Gotkowski, Fernande Breil-Decrook, and Sarah Feigin.
Julian Kirk Doyle, creator of the program, said: “Many of these pieces are not often programmed or considered in our standard musical habits, but they should be.” spoke. “These women’s lives were rich and glorious, and they accomplished everything from motherhood and housework to performing and writing beautiful music, often overlooked by male composers of the time. , they should not have been overlooked!”
Dr. Carol Lowe, bassoon, and Julie Miller, piano, will present a faculty recital on Monday, October 7th at 7:30 pm, also at the Snell Theatre. The concert will feature works by Jean-Baptiste Senaille, Vladimir Bakaleinikov and Eugène Bozza. The Aria Reed Trio, including Rowe, Kirk Doyle, and oboeist Anna Hendrickson, will participate in the work by Fernand Braille-DeCruc. The concert ends with Barbara York’s Sonata for Bassoon and Piano.
The Potsdam Brass Quintet will hold its fall concert at the Snell Theater on Tuesday, October 8th at 7:30 p.m.
The Crane Mariachi Ensemble will lead a lively performance, also at Snell, on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:30 p.m.
The Student Composers Forum will feature an evening of works composed by current Crane School of Music students on Thursday, October 10th at 7:30pm in the Snell Theater. A total of six emerging composers will perform their latest works, including works for a variety of small ensembles and fixed media.
Flutist Dr. Brian Dunbar will present a faculty recital in the Snell Theater on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:30 p.m.
The Crane School of Music will welcome guest artist Robert Levinger (piano) to perform with violinist Chihiro Kakishima at the Snell Theater on Thursday, October 17th at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Kakishima is a visiting assistant professor of violin, and Mr. Levinger is an award-winning pianist who performs solo with orchestras across the country.
