The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requesting that the seat of Chris Nkwonta, the lawmaker representing Ukwa East and Ukwa West in the House of Representatives, be vacated.
This follows the defection of Chris Nkwonta to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
A statement released by Jude Ndukwe, Media Adviser to the PDP Caretaker Committee in Abia, called on INEC to conduct fresh elections to replace the members who left the party within the constitutionally mandated deadline.
The PDP argued that Nkwonta did not meet the provisions of the law that led to his defection to the APC.
Ndukwe added that there were no issues within the state PDP or even at the federal level that would justify Kunwonta’s abuse of the law.
“This request to INEC is for electoral bodies to comply with the provisions of Article 68(1)(g) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended,” Ndukwe said in a statement. said. Since the hon. Mr. Nkwonta’s asylum did not meet the conditions set out in our laws prior to asylum for members of the Union.
However, Don Ubani, a PDP member from Ukwa East and Ukwa West federal constituencies and former chief of staff in the state, said Nkwonta’s defection was in line with the decision of the party leader in the constituency. .
