The African Action Congress (AAC) has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for claiming that he will influence the selection of his successor in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Speaking at an event on Thursday, Makinde said he received a report from the Commission on the Review and Updating of the State Civil Service Regulations and other National Civil Service Regulations, which will play a role in determining who will take over the Agodi government. House after term ends.
The governor said: “Now, I would like to express my gratitude to this committee. It has taken us nearly a year to get to this point, and we still have two years and seven months left.
“Those campaigning to be the next governor are still going to have to wait because I’m here until May 29, 2027. And I’m not sure who will be the next governor. He has the right to speak.”
“It is up to the people of Oyo State to decide, so it may not go my way, but I will speak out especially against the PDP people. They will have to fight me. ,” Makinde added.
In response, AAC Oyo Chairman Kayode Babayomi issued a statement condemning Makinde’s comments as a threat to democratic values.
The party said his comments were not only disrespectful but also indicative of an authoritarian mindset.
“This statement is not only humiliating, but also a threat to our democracy and shows Emperor Agodi’s authoritarian tendencies,” the AAC said.
“Through this statement, Governor Makinde has assured the people of Oyo State that their choice of who will lead the state after 2027 does not matter. This will provide clues to the governor’s plan.”
“The people of Oyo State are clairvoyant enough to understand what Makinde has said and will respond accordingly when the time comes.
“We, Oyo State African Action Council, have warned the governor that as long as we practice democracy, the will of the people must always prevail.
“Governor Makinde’s imperial style of government has been in play since his first term in office and the ‘give and take’ card he used during the last decree will no longer work in Oyo State. Now people are wiser and his media package of emptiness, bad governance, empty promises and petty and spurious projects has unraveled. ”
The AAC has pledged to implement a strategy to ensure Makinde’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is ousted from power in the 2027 elections.
“We want to assure Mr. Makinde that the 2027 elections will not be conducted as usual.
“The good people of Oyo State cannot wait to show the Seyi-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the way out of the State House and into the dustbin of history.
“As the only option, AAC will continue to stand by the people and stand ready to work with them to save the country,” the statement concluded.
