The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere has vowed to rally and collaborate with Nigerians against the practice of Unitarianism in the country’s politics.
The group made this pledge in a communiqué issued by its Deputy Leader and National Publicity Secretary, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and Justice Faroye, respectively.
The party released the communiqué after its monthly meeting held in Isanya Ogbo Ogun State, the residence of its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
Mr. Afenifere maintained that the introduction of the bill to establish the National Independent Local Government Electoral Commission (NILGEC) to conduct local government elections was a colossal multiplication of INEC’s 774 degrees of inefficiency.
The party deplored all forms of political brutality aimed at suppressing democracy by Nigeria’s two-tier government structure and condemned political gerrymandering that forced Nigeria into a unitary state.
“The idea of a federal body conducting local government elections is a real weapon in the promotion of the unconcealed policy of complete occupation and absolute unitarism of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the central government; It has reached its climax under the current administration.
“The federal government and its INEC have proven inept at conducting limited elections subject to constitutional constraints,” the report said.
