Labor Party (LP) Interim Committee Chairman Nenadi Usman has announced plans to appeal the court’s decision confirming Julius Habre as the party’s national chairman.
Recall that the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, on Tuesday upheld the leadership of Julius Abre and justified the March 2024 Nnewi Congress that produced the current LP executives. .
The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Mr Habre as the legitimate party chairman.
In response to the ruling, Usman said in a short statement that the management committee, which was set up after the suit began, joined the suit after a comprehensive briefing.
“Tonight, I met with Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti and the Secretary of the LP Management Committee, Senator Darlington Nwokocha,” Usman said.
“We discussed today’s judgment. Although this incident occurred before the establishment of the Management Committee, we decided to participate after receiving detailed information. As a result, We have decided to appeal this decision.”
Usman called on Labor members to remain calm and support continued efforts to promote reconciliation and unity within the party.
The conflict within the Labor Party intensified in February when Labour’s national treasurer, Oluchi Opara, accused Julius Habre of misappropriating NOK 3.5 billion. Habre has denied the allegations and threatened legal action, but the allegations prompted calls from some party members for his removal.
In April 2023, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court ordered Mr. Abre and other state civil servants, including Mr. Farouk Ibrahim, Mr. Clement Ojukwu and Mr. Oluchi Opara, to retain their positions as party leaders. issued a restraining order.
A 29-member interim committee, chaired by former senator Nenadi Usman, was established following a stakeholder meeting convened by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia on September 4. Labor Party leaders attended the meeting, including Peter Obi and the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Dati Babahamed.
