The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked the alleged smuggling of BVAS machines in Edo, calling it baseless, baseless and without merit.
NAN reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a petition to INEC on October 10, alleged that PDP members smuggled BVAS machines and voter registers to INEC offices in Benin.
However, in a statement in Benin on Friday, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Anugbumu Onuoha, said the commission had completed its investigation into the allegations and found them baseless, baseless and meritorious. He said he determined that there was no such thing.
Mr Onuoha reassured the public that BVAS machines and voter registers will never be compromised or illegally accessed by any political party or external group.
He said INEC remained committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
“Recognizing the seriousness of these allegations, the Commission conducted its investigation with the highest levels of rigor, professionalism and impartiality.
“As an institution mandated to ensure free, fair and credible elections, INEC does not tolerate any form of fraud.
“The integrity of all election materials, including BVAS, remains completely intact and secure,” he said.
Mr. Onuoha said that pursuant to a recent court order, INEC is ready to facilitate the inspection of election materials to ensure transparency and compliance with the rule of law in the handling of BVAS machines.
He called on all political parties to cooperate in the inspection process.
The REC also advised political actors to focus on strengthening democratic principles and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in the electoral system.
He said the commission remains committed to neutrality and excellence in election administration and remains determined to ensure credible results in all elections.
