The American Music Awards’ 50th Anniversary Special brought the best of music to LA Center Studios, and the red carpet was a mix of dramatic glamor, sexy chic, and casual nonchalance. Here’s the spoils of the night’s most notable looks.
Golden (not literal) charm
Jennifer Hudson created drama in a La Roxx liquid velvet dress with a sheer crystal-accented yoke, but some might say this style feels a little dated. But given her status as a true diva and the fact that she was performing on a night dedicated to musical legends past and present, this outfit felt perfect for her. The gown had a classic “old-school glamor meets performance spectacle” vibe, perfect for Jennifer’s powerful character. She embraced luxury, and it worked, at least for me.

Kate Hudson, on the other hand, took a different path. As a new girl on the music scene, she chose a light green Fendi Fall/Winter 2023 Couture dress with silk fringe and embroidery. The sexy silhouette was definitely stunning and accentuated her figure while exuding understated charm. But the fabric had a strangely nostalgic effect, reminding me of the carpets I used to have in my childhood bedroom, and not necessarily in a good way. Despite the gorgeous craftsmanship, the texture was an odd choice for me.

Jordyn Woods sported what can only be described as the quintessential music awards ceremony look. Balmain’s silver mini dress is made from smooth liquid fabric and paired with metallic pumps. The sparkling, hugging ensemble was everything you’d expect from an event like this, bold and daring. Judith Leiber’s Wildcat Bengal Tiger clutch provided a playful accent that complemented her amber ring.
Come as you are
And then there was Ray, who was exactly as he was. Arriving in a brown sweatshirt and green knit mini skirt, her look was a surprising choice for the awards ceremony. Whether you like it or not, there’s something refreshingly pure about her unwillingness to conform. However, some may wonder if their luggage from London was lost en route.
All in all, AMA’s 50th anniversary showcased a full range of styles: dramatic, elegant, bold, and even subtle. It was a night where each artist stayed true to themselves and embraced fashion that reflected their individuality, and that alone was worth celebrating.
