Rep. Galbakoko, a member of the House of Representatives, has been exiled from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).
He cited the long-term crisis within the PDP as a reason to leave.
Naija News reports that House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced Koko’s asylum on Wednesday, reading a letter from the lawmakers on the floor of the House. Koko represents Besse/Maiyama Yema Federal Constituency in Kebbi Province.
Minority leaders go against takeoff claims
However, minority leader Kingsley Chinda quickly rejected Coco’s claim, claiming that the PDP had no long-term crisis.
“It’s important to correct false impressions. There are no long-term issues with PDP,” Chinda said.
He further argued that all Nigerian political parties, including the APC and the Labour Party (LP), are facing internal wrangling, explaining that they have explained that Coco’s justification is unfounded. .
Chinda urged speakers to declare that Coco seats were open in line with section 68 of the 1999 Constitution.
“Houses need to implement the constitution by declaring seats open. Let’s not continue to set bad precedents,” Chinda said.
In response, Abbas ruled that only the court has the authority to declare seats available for lawmakers.
Asylum trends in the Diet
Koko’s asylum occurs just 24 hours after Kaduna’s Amos Magaji leaves APC’s PDP. His move is part of a growing trend in which lawmakers have transformed their loyalty into the ruling party.
In recent months, several lawmakers have been exiled to the APC from the PDP and LP.
October 2: Chris Nkwonta (UKWA East/UKWA West Federal Constituency, ABIA) has left APC’s PDP.
October 30: Sulaiman Abubakar (Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, Zamfara) passed away from PDP to APC.
December 5th: Four Labour MPs and one PDP MP also joined the APC.
