The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended former Minister of Interior, Mr. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for alleged anti-party activities.
According to Vanguard, in a resolution submitted to the APC National Secretariat and addressed to the National Chairman, Dr. Umaru Ganduje, Osun APC accused Aregbesola, who previously served as governor, of creating a rival faction. He accused him of fomenting divisions within the party.
The APC maintains that the act disrupted the unity of the party, especially at a sensitive time in Osun politics.
Party leaders believe that Mr. Aregbesola’s influence over certain groups has deepened internal rifts, which the state branch considers detrimental to party unity.
It reads: “Following the Commission, the State Executive Committee (SEC), Eastern Local Government Executive, considered the allegations and confirmed that Article 21(3)(vi) of the Party Constitution ( c), I hereby decide to suspend Mr. Ogbeni.” The party’s Rauf Aregbesola is awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the allegations by the disciplinary committee.
“The National Executive Committee shall appoint a disciplinary committee to investigate allegations of activities deemed to be in violation of Article 21(2) of the Party Constitution, especially anti-Party activities that undermine the collective organization, and give Ogbeni Aregbesola an opportunity to respond. The interests of the APC were as follows:
“Factionalization of the party through the creation of a splinter group, namely the Omoluabi caucus. Attached is a trending video of their recent activities on Iwo Jima. Creation of a parallel body within the party.
“Collaborating with opposition parties to weaken APC in the state – Entry made at Ataoja Palace, Osogbo on January 4, 2024. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), Bisi Akande The public uprising against party leaders including the Secretary, His Excellency Gboyega Oyetola and others.
“He refuses to participate in or support any political party in the state, and has refused to vote for that party since the 2019 general election.”
The suspension represents a bold step by Osun APC to address its internal issues and refocus its leadership priorities in preparation for the next election. Depending on the development of the situation, a reaction from the Aregbesola camp is expected.
