DES MOINES, Iowa — The Central Iowa Music Lab held a concert Sunday, giving students a chance to perform on stage and show off their skills.
Students gathered in the Val Air Ballroom to perform for their families and each other. This event occurs twice a year and is hosted by the Central Iowa Music Lab as a way for students to gain performance experience and showcase their musical talents.
Central Iowa Music Lab was founded in 2008 with assistance from James Biehn. The goal is to encourage and help students in Central Iowa teach music and performance. James wanted to fill a void that had formed in the music world over the years.
“I grew up just hanging out in the garage with other classmates and other musicians, but these days when there’s a live show or a screen, it’s a lot of fun meeting up in a room with other people and having fun. “Sometimes I feel like I’m not alone. I might not be good at first, but I might be great,” Bean said.

James teaches beginners through advanced musicians. Those students will have the opportunity to perform in a band with other students in front of a real audience. These students often have the opportunity to grow up and work with some of today’s most famous bands.
“I think humans were born to be creative, and I think the idea of putting something into the world that hasn’t existed before is really interesting,” Bean said.
Always looking to innovate and popularize music, James plans to add additional orchestral instrumentalists. This provides a wider range of choices and allows students to learn about all musical genres.
The Central Iowa Music Lab currently teaches more than 300 students with the help of more than 20 professional musicians.
