Chase Rice brought his mother to watch the music video for his new song, “You in ’85,” but she appeared to be crying before he could press play.
This personal ballad compares Rice to her father, Daniel Rice, who died in 2008. His memory has always permeated the singer’s music, but songs about his father have stood out in recent years as he offers fans a more traditional, organic brand of country music.
Find “You in ’85” on Rice’s new Go Down Singin’ album. This is his first independently released album after over a decade of making music for Sony and Broken Bow. Taste of Country’s interview with Rice will be featured on this week’s Taste of Country Night. : On-demand podcasts.
In an interview with Taste of Country, Rice described her father as a true hero. From the decades-old photo that covers his 2023 album, I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go to Hell, he sings, just like his father did, ‘Go Down Singin’. ” jacket with a Coors Banquet beer in hand.
“My father was a great father, and my mother was a great mother,” he says. “We grew up in a family of three boys and lived the American dream, and we want to recreate that.”
A social media video shared on September 23 shows Rice inviting her mother onto the bus to watch a music video. It’s filled with old Rice family footage that depicts Daniel as a strong man who isn’t afraid to have fun with his sons.
“I was so excited to see my dad for the first time in 16 years, but he looks so different than he looks in pictures,” he wrote in the caption. “This video is full of great memories.”
Connie Rice sits trying to hold back tears while Chase stands with his hand on her shoulder. They take a trip down memory lane together.
Rice’s desire to become a father comes with obstacles. He is worried about marriage.
When asked why, he replied, “Well, I love women.” “I don’t think it’s a secret. It would be a hell of a woman to come into my life and say, ‘Okay.’
He also has great respect for the institution of marriage and doesn’t want to ruin it.
Fans who learned of Rice from songs like 2013’s “Ready Set Roll” and have since grown tired of it may not know the songwriter’s version. The transition to a more introspective, less flashy artist has continued over several albums, now free from record label expectations and input and leaning more towards an organic sound.
“It makes sense, though,” he says. “I’m 38 years old. Why am I still singing ‘Ready Set Roll’ and ‘Eyes on You’?”
“For a You” is a song about Rice’s father. Like “You in ’85,” this song closed out his last studio album.
