Chrissy Metz had to endure unnecessary Hollywood comparisons for her breakout role.
Opening up about her role as Kate Pearson on NBC’s “This Is Us,” the two-time Golden Globe nominee said she was inspired by creator Dan, who ultimately contributed to plus-size representation on screen. He talked about how it felt to be “chosen for such a special role” by Fogelman.
“I always get really emotional when I think about Dan,” Metz said on The Jamie Kahn Lima Show. “First of all, he’s a really great guy, in the most humble sense, even in the self-deprecating sense. And he’s so in tune with emotion and the human condition. That comes through in everything he does. I think so.
she added. “But this was originally planned as a movie, and one of the executives at some company, I don’t know where, said, ‘Oh, wait a minute, and this plus-size girl, she’s so plus-size. I said, “What is that?” ?Like Kate Winslet? And[Fogelman]was like, “First of all, what are you talking about?” Secondly, no, this is a real woman who is serious about her weight problem and it has plagued her her whole life. ”
Metz noted that the character was “loosely based on his sister” and said, “I think Kate was very important to Dan.” In the show, Kate struggles with self-esteem throughout her life due to her obesity, and her relationship with her mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is strained.

“So I knew that and I also knew that he was very intentional about who he wanted,” Metz explained before starting to tear up. “I’ve never felt so chosen in my life…and I always say, to be chosen for such a special role and show and era… , if I never book another role or show or movie again, I think that’s enough.”
Milo Ventimiglia and Moore were the parents of the “big three” triplets Kate, Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) on the NBC drama series, which ran for six seasons starting in 2016. They played a certain Jack and Rebecca. The show followed the Pittsburgh family through multiple eras, from the birth of their children, to Jack’s untimely death, to the adult lives of the triplets as they raise their own family.
