Brave Words’ Greg Prato spoke with Kings Excerpts from the interview are shown below.
BraveWords: How did you decide on the album title…?
Dug Pinnick: I love naming albums, and really unusual names. And I like words. I’m a word guy. I also like the names of things. My great-grandmother, who raised me, used to say, those are the words of an old man. The people who once said that are probably dead at this point. But they say, “Pick up that Amazigha over there.” If I didn’t know his name, I’d probably call him “Singamajigar”…
BraveWords: One song that really stands out to me is the album opener, Climbing Up The Mountain (listen here).
Doug Pinnick: “Musically, I had this AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, funk vibe going on in my head. I came up with that drum beat and thought, ‘What’s this going to look like? Is that so?” I thought. That’s when I came up with the guitar part. And I always write the songs before I get the lyrics. But I think I had just turned 71 when the lyrics to “Climb Up the Mountain” came to me — because I just turned 74, and it’s been three years since I released “Joy Bomb.” It was about 2000. Somewhere in between, I started thinking about life at this age. And sometimes I feel like I’m climbing a mountain and I look back at everything I’ve done, everything I’ve learned, good and bad. And when I look back and see that people younger than me are going through what I’ve already gone through, I just feel like I have to be grateful and cherish the rest of my life. And don’t let others drag you down when I’m trying to get to the next age and they’re trying to get to my age.
BraveWords: Will King’s X work on a sequel to Three Sides Of One?
Doug Pinnick: Yeah. I submitted some of the new songs I’ve written since Singamajigar to them. And Ty (Tabor) and Jerry (Gaskill) both say they have a lot of songs. So the next thing is to finally figure out when we want to get together and what we have to go through to make a record. Because we live in three different regions of the country. So, sooner or later, we’re going to get serious about it. That hasn’t really happened yet, but we’re talking about it. That’s good.
